Trestleboard: From The East – A Melting Potluck of Brothers
Brethren,
As I enjoy a slice of pumpkin bread baked and prepared by W.B. Jeriel Smith, I am reflecting on our successful stated meeting and preceding dinner, to open the month of August. August, within our lodge, has held the tradition as the time for potluck dinners; and this August held fast to that tradition. Since joining the lodge, I have noticed that potluck dinners are greatly appreciated by the brethren and their families. Perhaps, my mind is presently under the influence of this delicious bread, the fact is that it has helped me to realize a correlation between potluck dinners and the membership of our lodge as a whole.
The lodge is much like a potluck. We all bring something different to the lodge and participation gives our strengths and talents opportunities to flourish, develop and shine. In this way, the brothers can appreciate the very best each of us has to offer. No matter how big or small, every contribution helps to build the character and personality of the lodge. As I slowly back away from a third slice of pumpkin bread, I recollect the famous quote of John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” It’s a great quote. How does this apply to lodge? Well, I would adapt the quote a bit to suggest: “Ask what I can bring to the Potluck (lodge)”.
