LEAD ME TO THE WONDROUS PLACE!
(A Seasonal Meditation for the Winter)

O reminiscent glow and Zenith long eclipsed, thou who, by God’s appointed frosty breath, hast seen the ambered hour fade ‘way: Seal mine eyes and prepare me for my dreams! Guard me as I sleep, and let it be with angels of Thy charge! Let their twinkling in the realm above mine head prevent the tainting of the sacred space unknown and keep in place the silver chord as thereunto I venture for a time. Assure my loved ones with the common chant that though our journeys be alone, propitious be their calling; and in the springtime we shall surely meet again. Monarch on thy Nadir Throne, while thy contour be obscured, my soul doth hear thy voice and song. While my body firm and dormant be, aetheric be the land I roam. How glorious are the sights, unseen but sought! How stately are the words, unspoke’ but heard! Take mine hand o formless guide. Lead me to the wondrous place where clouds resolve and lights appear, where anthems sate the yearning ears and boundless love doth nurse unto neglected souls. Return me to mine icy bed and lead me to the place of mirthful sounds and solar rising and, alas, where all I’ve gathered will bless a new-born world.

From the East

Welcome to the first issue of our new Trestleboard! Our intention with this latest evolution of our Trestleboard tradition is to promote communication and collaboration between the pillar officers and the membership. Whether you receive this digitally or through the mail, we can all share in this publication and use it to its fullest potential. In a time where we cannot always meet in person, the Trestleboard will be a new space for brothers to contribute and share their studies and reflections on the craft during a time when we have had to halt many of our usual traditions. Our dear craft is a great one and it deserves to be celebrated! I hope you will all help us and let us know what you think! I have no doubt great things lie ahead of us. As we move in a new Masonic year we will continue to be challenged by the Corona Virus Pandemic. I know that whatever may come our way, we will endure and overcome by the strength of our unity and dedication to Freemasonry and Culver City-Foshay Lodge No. 467. Be well and be safe!

Cardinal Virtues and Stoicism

During my pursuit of knowledge and personal development I happened upon the topic of the Ancient Stoic philosophy. My research has uncovered a striking correlation between stoicism, the chivalric codes of the middle ages and Freemasonry. By looking at the virtues of our fraternity from another angle, I was able to broaden my understanding of what is meant by “Temperence, Fortitude, Prudence, and Justice”.  The article I found does not directly mention Freemasonry, but does mention the four cardinal virtues and “Brotherly Love”.

The article is titled “The Stoic Virtues and Code of Honor” by Donald J. Robertson The correlations to Freemasonry and the Royal Arch degrees are striking. I found it enlightening and I hope you do as well.
